Your Rights When You Join the Union
Things to know about Joining a Union
First things first, know that every conversation, email, text message or note you share with one of our Organizers is confidential.
Second, know that it is ILLEGAL for your employer to threaten, discipline or fire you because of any real or alleged Union activity. In fact, your employer cannot change any of the conditions of work (i.e. wages) once the Union has filed an application with the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
Third, know that you have the RIGHT to join a Union. That right is guaranteed under the Ontario Labour Relations Act (OLRA) and the Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms, under Freedom of Association. Sometimes employers make veiled threats like ‘the company won’t be able to afford to stay open,’ or ‘you’ll have to go on strike.’ Just remember that these things are said only to try and sway your vote against joining. And a vote against the Union is a vote against your own rights! If your employer threatens you, be sure to tell your Organizing Rep!
Lastly, remember that some organizing drives don’t take long but some can take months! The more united the workers, the easier the Organizing drive.
